What Is an LCM Pool?

An LCM pool measures 50 meters from one wall to the other. A 100-meter race therefore requires two lengths and one turn; a 200-meter race requires four lengths and three turns. Long course is the format used for Olympic swimming and many major international championships. USA Swimming's rules define long course as a 50-meter course, which is why meet schedules and result databases often place “LCM” beside every recorded time.

The abbreviation prevents an important misunderstanding. A time without its course label is incomplete. “1:00.00 in the 100 freestyle” could describe a 100-yard SCY swim or a 100-meter LCM swim. Those performances cover different distances and occur under different turn patterns. Coaches, swimmers and parents should preserve SCY, SCM or LCM whenever they record, compare or share a result.

LCM vs SCM vs SCY

SCM means short course meters and uses a 25-meter pool. SCY means short course yards and uses a 25-yard pool. LCM and SCM share the metric unit, so a 100-meter event covers the same distance in either format. The difference is wall count: the SCM race uses four lengths and three turns, while the LCM race uses two lengths and one turn.

SCY changes both the pool length and the race unit. One international yard is exactly 0.9144 meter, making a 25-yard pool exactly 22.86 meters long. A 100-yard race is therefore exactly 91.44 meters, not 100 meters. Standard distance events also use paired names: 500 yards is compared with 400 meters, 1,000 yards with 800 meters, and 1,650 yards with 1,500 meters.

More walls can help swimmers who are strong at turns, push-offs and underwater phases. Longer uninterrupted lengths can favor athletes with efficient stroke mechanics and endurance. A course conversion factor provides a consistent comparison, but it cannot predict every athlete's exact result because individual skills differ.

Why LCM Times Usually Look Slower

LCM times are usually longer than SCY times in the corresponding event family for two reasons. First, meter races cover more physical distance than yard races with the same numeral. Second, a 50-meter pool offers fewer turns, so swimmers receive fewer wall push-offs and underwater opportunities. That does not mean an LCM swim is worse; the course describes a different performance environment.

SCM comparisons are subtler because SCM and LCM races cover the same metric distance. A swimmer completing 200 meters in SCM makes seven turns, while the same LCM event has three. The additional walls often make SCM times faster, but the size of the difference varies with stroke, distance and the swimmer's strengths. A universal distance ratio cannot capture that.

How LCM-to-SCY Time Conversion Works

NCAA Appendix C publishes long-course-meter to short-course-yard factors by event and gender. The prescribed direction starts with the LCM time in seconds, multiplies it by the matching factor, carries the arithmetic to five decimal places, and drops digits below one hundredth of a second without rounding. The factor must match the swimmer's event; there is no safe all-purpose LCM factor.

For example, Appendix C demonstrates a men's 200-meter breaststroke time of 2:16.71 LCM. That is 136.71 seconds. The published factor is 0.858:

136.71 × 0.858 = 117.29718 seconds
truncate to hundredths → 117.29 seconds
converted SCY estimate → 1:57.29

When an LCM Conversion Is Useful

Conversions help coaches compare seasonal progress when a team moves between summer long-course racing and a short-course championship season. They can also help swimmers understand approximate seed-time relationships or set practice targets. Always keep the original achieved time and label a converted value as an estimate.

Meet entry rules take priority. A governing body, conference or meet host may accept a specific conversion method, publish a different procedure or require an achieved time in the target course. NCAA factors do not turn an estimate into an official performance. Check the meet information before using any converted result for eligibility or qualification.

Distance events deserve extra care because their standard race numbers differ. How to Read an LCM Result

Start with the label: event, distance, course and achieved time. “Women's 100 butterfly, LCM, 1:04.20” contains enough context to choose the correct table entry. A time written without the course does not. For relays, unusual distances or events missing from the official table, do not invent a factor; consult the applicable NCAA, USA Swimming or World Aquatics rules.
